A founder who froze in front of investors

Public Speaking Course

The client — The founder of a London payments company, preparing for a Series A roadshow with sixteen investor meetings scheduled over five weeks.

The problem — She presented fluently to her own team and to customers. In front of investors she spoke roughly forty per cent faster, ran out of breath mid-sentence, and twice had lost her place badly enough to need to restart. She described it as “freezing.” The recordings showed something more specific: the breath went first, and everything else followed.

What we found — Under adrenaline she was breathing high in the chest and not refilling between sentences. That alone accounts for the speed, the thinning voice, and the sensation of the mind going blank — you cannot think clearly while oxygen-starved. Underneath that, the pitch had no fixed structure, so there was nothing to find her place in when she did lose it.

What we did — The full eight-week course. Weeks one to two: diagnosis and breath. Weeks three to five: a pitch structure with five fixed landmarks she could always navigate back to. Weeks six to eight: pressure — pitching on camera, interrupted, timed, and with deliberately hostile questions.

The result — She completed all sixteen meetings without freezing. The round closed the week after the course ended. She has kept the breath work and now uses the same five-landmark structure for every talk she gives.

They showed me the recording from week one at the end of the course. I genuinely did not recognise the person speaking. That is the only proof I needed.
